Thyroid SPOREs

Thyroid cancer is the eighth most common cancer in the United States and includes four main types: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. In 2016, it is estimated that there will be 64,300 new cases of thyroid cancer and an estimated 1,980 deaths. Thyroid cancer is more common in women than men and includes risk factors such as a family history of thyroid disease/cancer, childhood exposure to radiation to the head and neck, exposure to radioactive fallout, a personal history of goiter, and certain genetic conditions.  The first Thyroid SPORE was funded in 2013, and there are currently two Thyroid SPOREs at The Ohio State University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
